When is Mother's Day in Ireland?
Mother's Day 2017 in Ireland will be on
Sunday, 30 March 2025
In Ireland, like in the United Kingdom, Mothering Sunday (Mother's Day) is held on the fourth Sunday in Lent, in other words, three weeks before Easter Sunday, usually during the second half of March or at the beginning of April. In times gone by, this day was put forward by the Church as a kind of break, a time of encouragement during the Lenten season, when people gave up certain things during a forty day period. Traditionally, young Irish people would go back to the church they had attended as children, accompanied by their mother and the rest of the family.
Nowadays, this day is an opportunity to gather the whole family together to offer mums gifts, chocolates and flowers, not to mention Simnel cake. This used to be a traditional Mothering Sunday cake, decorated with fresh or crystallized violets and 11 marzipan balls symbolizing Jesus’ apostles (minus Judas). Now it is more commonly made for Easter.
